FILLING YOUR GARDEN BED
YOU WILL RECEIVE:
YOUR ASSEMBLED WICKING BED WITH ALL THE WICKING SYSTEM ALREADY INSTALLED and A GEOTEXTILE FABRIC.
First, position your purchased planter box on a flat surface and fill with washed sand.
Fill the box with washed sand (sometimes called playground sand) a couple of centimetres above the overflow. (The overflow is outside)
Place the provided geotextile on top of the sand. (Note: The geotextile is now white in colour)
Fill the rest of the box with soil, making sure it is overfilled, as after a few days the soil will settle and fall 2-10 cms .
Cover your soil with mulch (loose lucerne hay, pea straw or sugar cane).
Fill the box with water through the system inlet (higher pipe) until the water comes out through the overflow (side lower pipe).
That is it!
Now it is ready to be planted.
Give a good traditional watering to the box to boost the soil's ability to wick. Do this for a week or until your plants are settled.
Finally, it is recommended (once a year) to turn overflow anti clock wise until horizontal level is reached. Let the water run for a couple of minutes to wash the bottom of the system to reduce excess salts and minerals accumulated.
We recommend keeping your beautiful cypress protected with a coat of linseed oil mixed with gum turps (50/50). Apply with a spray bottle. It is natural and cost effective.
